Research:
My most significant research has been on the following
topics. All of this research has been conducted jointly with colleagues
and research students.
- Disproof of the dogma that the rot nodule bacterium Rhizobium can only fix nitrogen when symbiotic with a higher plant.
- Development and registration of a new cultivar of the annual pasture
legume Medicago polymorpha cv. Serena
- Participating in the selection and propagation of die-back resistant
jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata)
- Discovery that Phytophthora cinnamomi can infect jarrah through bark at the base of ponded trees
- Development of salt tolerant clones of Australian trees
- Development of tissue culture techniques for Australian native plants
- Helping initiate a valuable new industry - plantation culture of Santalum album (sandalwood) in the
Ord River Irrigation Area
I have supervised 32 honours and 21 PhD students with an additional 7
PhDs current.
